Analysis of pledges of emerging economies: assumptions, potentials, implementation

(Analyse der Minderungsangebote von Schwellenländern: Annahmen, Potenziale, Umsetzungsgrad)

The integration of emerging economies into the climate regime is one of the largest challenges in climate diplomacy. In this context the project aims to provide analysis that supports the realistic evaluation of the pledges from the most important emerging economies (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea). This includes the assumptions on which the pledges are based as well as the available potential in the countries and the status of implementation. The project also provides ongoing support to the climate negotiations.

The project aims to provide a realistic evaluation of the mitigation pledges of the analysed countries (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea) relative to their ‘business-as-usual’ development. This will be put into the context of the feasibility of such reductions and in the global context of the agreed objective to limit temperature increase to 2°C.

In addition the project will provide policy analysis on the status of low carbon development strategies and nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). This will include analysis of the status and level of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of NAMAs in these countries.
